Summit Jaguar Marching Band
A Tradition of Excellence

The Summit Jaguar Marching Band has a tradition of excellence. Under the direction of Chris Kanicki, the band's 2017 marching show 'Destiny' took third place at the Wylie Marching Invitational, received straight superior ratings at the UIL Region 5 contest and took sixth place  in finals at the UIL Area B contest.

The band's Wind Symphony is the first in Mansfield ISD and the only north Texas band to receive an invitation to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December of 2017. Individually, the Summit Band sent the most students in the region to the Texas All-State Band in 2017.

Summit High School, which opened in 2002, is located in Mansfield ISD,  just south of Dallas/Fort Worth. The district is growing fast with a diverse population of 33,809 students. Our high school has more than 2,000 students grades 9-12; 51% are economically disadvantaged classifying Summit as a high-achieving Title I school.

Student population is diverse: 39% African-American, 25% Latino, 25% White, 7% Asian, and 4% other.

With 210 students in band, we offer 3 band classes based on ability that meet for 90  minutes each day.  We also offer marching band, musical orchestra, jazz band, percussion ensembles and colorguard as after school activities.

Our students begin band in sixth grade at Cross Timbers Intermediate School. We work closely with the intermediate and Howard Middle School directors to coordinate a vertically-aligned curriculum. This has resulted in an enrollment of more than 600 kids in the band program in grades 6-12. Our goal is to have a well-rounded curriculum that utilizes music to develop life-long learners by teaching work ethic, teamwork and artistic appreciation.

In spite of the obstacles inherent in a Title I school and due to vigorous support from our district, the Summit Band has earned many distinctions including c
onsecutive University Interscholastic League Sweepstakes Awards with Varsity, Non-Varsity, and Sub-Non Varsity Concert Bands since 2006 as well as consistently high representation in our All-Region/Area/State contest process.
